by Mikel Kuehn. For soprano sax and piano. Resonances by Mikel Kuehn is a great addition to solo recital repertoire. The piece employs some modern conventions, including idiomatic writing for both instruments. The duration is approximately 6 minutes.
"Written for Dr. John Sampen and Dr. Marilyn Shrude, the piece was the result of a request for pieces that were loosely based on the popular protest song song We Shall Overcome. While the embedding of the tune is not obvious, it does occur on all levels of the piece and is traced slowly by the unison pitches between saxophone and piano. The overall texture is also determined by the idea of "overcoming" as the saxophone gradually prevails over the piano across the work's duration. " --- comments by the composer.
