What is it that makes a concert an inspiring experience for the listener? This was the initial question in the process of planning this debut CD of the IVORY & REED. Obviously there are several possible ways towards this goal but the most appealing one for this project seemed to be offering a broad versatility in musical styles and thereby different ways of expression in a concert program setting. The result is a multifaceted journey from Schumann’s songlike ‘Romances’ through the neo-Baroque Hindemith sonata to the late-romantic virtuoso piece by Desenclos up to the epic violin sonata by Franck. To hear traditional repertoire like Schumann or Franck in this instrumental combination might seem far-fetched at first but piano and saxophone turn out to be great partners not only for original repertoire but also in casting new light on all-too-known pieces--the two timbres compliment each other exceptionally well and provide an earopening experience.
